Questions on Scarpa Ranger Gore-Tex Boot Womens
- From zim at 30/07/11 5:43 PM
- So my partner and I each purchased a pair of Scarpa rangers a few weeks ago, we did about 70km. But they are still giving blisters on the heal, numbing the balls of our feet and worse of all straining our achilles tendons. We have resorted to wearing our everyday trainers, for some of the more challenging legs of the walks and they give us no troubles. How long should it take to wear them in and how can we speed this process up as we are away on walks all week and only home on weekends. Need to be comfy on our feet.
Any advise is welcome - Hi Zim
Thank you for sharing your experience. The fit of the boot seems to be troubling you, even painful. Let me begin my response by congratulating you on your choice of boots if it's actually the best for your pack weight and the shape of your foot. The Ranger GTX gives good comfort straight out of the box compared to many full grain leather boots. It is not overly rigid and gives good cushioning under foot. The soft suede leather around the ankle and tongue of the boot gives that immediate comfort.
The full grain leather can take a couple of months to break-in, i.e. soften and mold to your foot. You can speed this up by wearing the boot regularly and/or dampening the leather and wearing/using them whilst they dry. It is best to break-in a new pair of boots on short walks/day walks. You and your new boots will get to know each other and then love one another's company!
But is it giving you enough support? Do you need a more rigid boot for carrying a heavy pack? How heavy is your pack compared to you? Let me know and we'll continue with this topic later.
The blisters can sometimes be fixed by ensuring your boots are laced firmly to minimise your foot movement inside the boot. Also wearing a thin liner sock under your thicker, more cushioned, expedition sock can make a lot of difference. Changing socks each day can also make the difference your feet need.
I love your lifestyle by the way, 'walk all week and only home on weekends' ... how do I get a lifestyle like that (that pays)?!
Best regards
