  are the underarm vent zips a problem for backpacking? (I'm imagining my pack straps pushing on them)
  
  can you advise approximate weight of women's size 14 (L?)

  The underarm vent zips shouldn't be a problem with backpacks; it's double zipped so you can choose to open them at either end of the vent. However, even without this, vents in general shouldn't be a problem otherwise you would be wearing a very uncomfortable backpack!
