Within the climbing community there are dozens of different groups that all cover different aspects of our sport.   These different groups encompass the competitive climbers who mostly train indoors; the university clubs who usually only venture outdoors; the commercial guides who get the pleasure of introducing climbing to people who may never experience it otherwise; the list goes on!

These groups occasionally overlap for some individuals but usually one group doesn’t know much about the other and we don’t have an opportunity to learn what each has to offer.  And this is why the climbing festival is vital to the climbing community.

All these groups came together in one venue, and we got to experience another aspect of climbing that we don’t always have the opportunity to do otherwise.

Thanks to Paddy Pallin I was able to attend this festival and experience those other worlds.

I got to watch the national bouldering titles and see competitors crush hard:  James Kassay won the male open A, while Claire Langmore won the female open A.  For all the results head to the Sport Climbing Australia results page: http://www.sportclimbingaustralia.org.au/results/

I got to do an introduction to training with none other than Monique Forestier; Monique has many climbing accomplishments and went through the difference between climbing a lot and training.

ACF-24

I got a brief instruction from Australian Climbing Instructors Association (ACIA) on how to abseil past a knot and how to set up a z-drag:  I ended up being the beginner climber who needed to be rescued which was loads of fun!

ACF-47

I got to hear from international speakers: Among others I got to hear from Hazel Findlay who gave an amazing account of her adventures overseas and her time on El Cap.

Finally I got to hear about how to adventure write from Tim Coupe:  This provided some insight into how to structure chapters with themes and that the essential part of writing a book is the idea, not necessarily the writing.

ACF-35

And let us not forget about the competitions! There were many opportunities to win prizes and many different competitions.  There was a writing competition, a photography competition, a dyno competition, a rope coiling competition, door prizes etc.  Every aspect related to climbing was covered, so even if you are not the strongest climber there was a competition for you!

These are all opportunities that I would never have had without the climbing festival putting us under one roof.  Hopefully this event will continue into the future!

There are many aspects that have to come together to put on an event like this, so I’d like to finish with a massive thank you to the organisers Gemma Woldendorp and Natasha Sebire and to the major sponsors Paddy Pallin, Scarpa and Edelrid.
