One of this years most keenly anticipated new product line-ups has just landed in the Paddy Pallin stores.

In production for four years, Sea to Summit have entered the sleeping mattress arena in a big way. The mats were internationally debuted at the Outdoor Retailer show in Sydney in June. Since then they have taken the outdoor industry by storm, raking up accolades at multiple big international trade shows. They received an Outdoor Award from the prestigious Fredrichshafen Show in Germany, as well as being recognised by Gear Junkie and Gear Institute at the Outdoor Retailer in the USA.

The mats have also had their R values (insulation) tested by an independent, third party laboratory. The EMPA, Material Science and Technology Lab in Switzerland was chosen to conduct the testing, the same lab that has previously conducted testing for Exped among other leading brands. Basically the results were that all mats reached there claimed R values, with three models actually testing higher than previously thought. Off to a good start!

The Technology:

The design feature that makes the Sea To Summit sleeping mats so unique is the ‘Air Sprung Cells’. These could be described as the portable equivalent to your cloud-like pocket-spring mattress at home. Under load each cell deforms independently, conforming to your body shape, providing more contact area and thus an even dispersion of pressure, and, Hey Presto!, comfort.

Air Sprung Cells differ from the traditional baffle construction of other air mats on the market because they are constructed using a dot-weld pattern. This pattern creates a high-surface-area matrix of interconnected chambers. But Air Sprung Cells are just the beginning of the innovation that’s engineered into these mats. Depending upon the model you choose, the Air Sprung Cells come as a single layer or dual independently-inflated layers. Single layer mats still provide a gloriously warm and comfortable sleep but in a package aimed at the weight conscious user. Adding a dual layer not only doubles down on comfort and warmth, but also has a few extra advantages – you can fine tune the amount of air in either layer to perfect your sleeping platform. And, if by some horrible twist of fate, you get a hole in one layer, the other layer will stay inflated, keeping you off the ground and, more importantly, asleep.

All of the mats boast Sea to Summit’s clever new Multi-Function Valve. With it, mats can be inflated with ease, deflated rapidly or fine tuned for customised comfort. The mats can be inflated with the optional Smart Pump or, if you want to travel super light, by mouth. That’s comfort sorted, now warmth. All insulated mats come standard with a very lightweight barrier called Exkin Platinum which reflects radiant heat back to the sleeper as well as a synthetic THERMOLITE® Insulation to keep you toasty warm in even the coldest conditions. Either of these technologies on their own is wonderful, together they are plush and will stave off even the most bone-chilling cold.

The Lineup: Paddy Pallin has carefully selected several models from the range, to give you the best from Sea to Summits mats. We are stocking the Ultralight, Ultralight Insulated, Comfort Light and Comfort Plus Insulated. With these mats Paddy Pallin has the best range of sleeping mats from Sea to Summit, Nemo and Thermarest. But dont just take our word for it, come try them out in store and see for yourself.

Anyone can tell you that accessories can make an outfit, and the same goes for a good night’s sleep. Sea to Summit has produced a line of excellent accessories to complete your sleeping wardrobe: the Jet Stream Pump Sack for easy inflation (also doubles as a stuff sack), the Air Stream Dry Sack for rapid inflation (doubles as a dry bag or pack liner), the Air Chair for campsite comfort, the Coupler Kit for ‘coupling’ couples, Coolmax fitted sheet and last but not least a Repair Kit.

Over the coming weeks and months we plan to put these mats to the test and find out for ourselves how they perform in the wild. Some Paddy’s staff have already tried them out and the initial feedback is ‘Comfortable!’. Stay tuned for a full report.
