How do I know when a pair of shoes are the right fit?

While hiking boots generally need some wearing in, they shouldn’t be uncomfortable when you try them on. They will feel stiff to begin with, and they can feel a little weird if you’ve never worn a boot as big as this before, however, if you have any sore spots on your feet when you’re walking around the store and trying the shoes on, that’s a bad sign. If you can feel rubbing within the first five minutes, you don’t want to think about how you’ll feel after five hours. Hiking boots should generally be at least half a size to a full size bigger than your regular fit. This is for a few reasons; one, because you will be wearing thicker, woolen socks; and two, because when you’re walking around all day, your feet will swell up, and if you don’t have a bit of extra room in your hiking boots, you’ll end up with your toes rubbing against the walls of the boots. It’s really important to take your time and listen to advice when you’re trying on hiking boots - hopefully this means you find the right pair to last you for many, many adventures.
