With OSMO, New Hampshire-born Nemo proves that you don’t need to sacrifice performance for sustainability. Nemo’s new proprietary fabric is the result of over 2 years of product development. It’s the first poly-nylon composite to hit the market and - get this -  it’s also made using fully recycled fabrics. This is a truly innovative lightweight backpacking tent fabric.

At Paddy Pallin, we stock three styles of OSMO tent: the Dagger, the Hornet, and the Hornet Elite. This range of super lightweight backpacking tents is made for long adventures on the trail and in the mountains. The Dagger is a roomier option built for comfort, whilst the Hornets are minimalist shelters. The main difference between the Hornet models generally comes down to weight. The Hornet Elite is the lightest option at just 812g for the 1-Person and 935g for the 2-Person. The original Hornet weighs in at 1.02kg for the 1-Person, 1.14kg for 2-Person  and 1.49kg for the 3-Person. Given the extra room, the Dagger is slightly heavier at 1.86kg for a 2-Person  and 2.1kg for 3-Person.

The Nemo OSMO fabric truly breaks the mould in the world of tent design and technology. Many tent fabrics are lightweight and strong, but they absorb water easily and tend to stretch when they are wet. The OSMO solves this problem through an innovative fabric blend. It’s crafted with a composite weave of recycled nylon and recycled polyester, utilising the benefits of both materials. Nylon is lightweight and strong, and polyester doesn’t stretch or absorb as much water as nylon, effectively solving this water absorbency issue. Combined with Nemo’s proprietary coating (developed specifically for OSMO tents), the fabric resists hydrolysis and retains its water repellency for much longer than an average backpacking tent. Compared to most backpacking tent fabrics, OSMO delivers 4x longer-lasting water repellency, stretches 3x less when wet, and provides exceptional strength at a reduced weight.

What makes the OSMO such an extraordinary fabric is the fact that it is made responsibly with consideration for people and the planet. It’s made with a 100% recycled nylon/polyester blend, which creates a 5kg CO2e reduction for every kg of OSMO produced. The material blend used to create OSMO is inherently hydrophobic and water-repellent, meaning that PFAs are not necessary to ensure water-repellency. This means that OSMO eliminates the use of harmful forever chemicals, with a PFAS-free and FRAS-free coating. Because the fabric is resistant to hydrolosis and has a higher tear strength to weight ratio (20% stronger) than comparable tents, OSMO can withstand more rain, wind, and extreme conditions. This means that OSMO is durable and built to last - so you won’t have to replace your tent as often, meaning less waste in landfill.
