Your hiking tent is your home away from home when out exploring so it is important to ensure you take care of your shelter both on and off the trail. We have put together a general care guide to ensure your tent lasts you for many exciting adventures but we always recommend following the manufacturer's specific instructions. 

Before the Hike

Before you take your shiny new tent out on its first adventure, make sure you are familiar with all the parts and how to correctly assemble it. Reaching camp after a long day on the trail and spending extra time setting up an unfamiliar tent is never a fun time. 

At the Campsite

Selecting the perfect spot

When picking a site to set up camp there are a few things to look out for:

• No large overhanging branches directly overhead, they are called widowmakers for a reason.
• Not too close to a fire, remember embers can float a fair way from the fire.
• Flat ground with minimal sticks and rocks to ensure the bottom of your tent isn’t at risk of tears or punctures

Ground Sheet

It’s a good idea to use a ground sheet or footprint when setting up your tent to protect the floor from rough terrain and increase the longevity of your tent. 

Guy Ropes

While it does take a little extra effort, setting up the guy ropes is definitely worth the time. They provide additional support for your tent in strong winds and help to keep the fabric taught to avoid pooling from water in wet conditions. Peg them out at approximately a 45 degree angle, following the natural line of the material where possible.

At Home

Cleaning

A gentle spray with a hose will help to remove any dry dirt and sand along with warm water on a soft sponge to spot clean. For tougher marks a specialised cleaner like the Revivex Pro Cleaner can be used.  

Drying

Even though it can be tempting to leave your gear in the corner and jump into bed after a long hike, it’s worth the time to unpack and air everything out. Mildew can start to form on wet, crumpled gear in as little as 24 hours, so the clock’s ticking. Make sure you tent has properly aired out and is completely dry before packing it away.

Storage

It’s best to store your tent loosely, in a breathable bag like a mesh storage sack or pillowcase in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight.
