Alpinist Yvon Chouinard founded Patagonia in 1973, naming the company after the wild and rugged region of southern South America. As a blacksmith who made his own pitons, Yvon wanted his clothing to be just reliable and efficient as his climbing gear. Today Patagonia continue to build clothes of the highest quality for outdoor enthusiasts who take their sport to the extreme. But Patagonia is not like other outdoor clothing and gear companies. Yes, they design thoughtful, quality-made products for climbing, surfing, fly-fishing, snow sports, trail running and everyday life, but they’re in business to accomplish a lot more than making clothing and profit : "Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, and use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.”
The love of a wild and beautiful world comes with an obligation to preserve its wilderness and beauty. Patagonia try to source materials and use processes that are les harmful to the earth without compromising quality. Products include clothing and gear made from organically grown cotton, sustainably grazed merino wool, traceable down, recycled polyester and hemp. Patagonia also donate time, energy and 1% of all sales to like-minded, grassroots environmental groups who are out there working to keep natural wonder in the world.
