Identical in construction and materials to Wilderness Equipment’s longstanding Outbreak model, the Pack 101’s point of difference is its simplified back system. The Pack 101 uses the e-AX variant of the legendary WE AX cross-frame. The frame bars are fed into their individual harness panel sleeves from the outside of the pack bag. The bottom ends of the bars locate in strongly reinforced pockets built into the separate Convert 38 AX hip harness, a variant of the Perfect-FIT hip harness. The hip harness is then held firmly in place behind the hinged lumbar pad. Assembly and disassembly couldn’t be faster or simpler. The Contour-FLEX shoulder harness arms are fixed to the pack bag and carefully sized and shaped to match each of the four back length options.

This arrangement has several distinct, important advantages:

• The pack weight is transferred directly from the bag into the hip harness.
• In the field, the frame bars are easily removed in emergency for other uses (for example, as splints) and disassembly in the gear store for cleaning, harness span change or to repair.

Like all WE packs, this is a tough product suited to continuous use.
