What type of material should I look for in my hiking clothes?

If you are going to be climbing mountains and exerting a lot of energy, look for moisture-wicking hiking clothing that draws sweat away from your body and dries quickly. Mountain clothing made from merino wool is also a good option as it is highly breathable and odour-resistant. The Australian bush can be quite rugged so look for durable fabrics if you are planning on walking down some overgrown tracks. 

How do I pick a hiking jacket?

With so many jackets it can be hard to know where to start. First, think about the outdoor activity and the climate which you will be using the jacket in. If you are in the mountains and the climate is cold, look for an insulated hiking jacket. Mountain clothing will need to be lightweight and warm. Goose-down jackets are very effective at retaining heat while being very lightweight and packable. We range many different men’s and women’s down jackets along with synthetic insulation pieces. If you are in moderate climates and exerting a lot of energy you will be looking for a very breathable jacket such as a light fleece jacket, as it will allow the excess heat and moisture to escape.

What is the best way to care for my camping clothing? 

Most hiking and camping clothes will have care instructions on the label with the best way to clean your garment. When cleaning Gore-Tex jackets and other waterproof fabrics, a specialised cleaner such as Nikwax Tech Wash is recommended as it does not damage the Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating on your gear. Don’t forget to wash your gear regularly as dirt and the oils from your skin will break down the waterproof membranes.
