FAQs
What types of hiking hats does Paddy Pallin stock?
A hiking hat can be used to keep the sun or rain off your face and neck while enjoying the outdoors. We stock a range of wide brimmed hats made from kangaroo leather and oiled cotton to keep both the UV and rain off, as well as a range of canvas and organic cotton wide brim, and synthetic bucket styles, for a sun protection hat. Most are foldable and come with an adjustable chin strap for convenience on the trail. We have a large selection of caps in baseball, trucker and snapback styles, with mesh paneling and quick-dry material perfect for everything from humidity to high out-put activities, to keeping the rain from your eyes. Our caps and visors come in an array of colour options. Our hiking hat range also includes recycled materials and UPF ratings across models.
Does Paddy Pallin stock balaclavas?
Yes, we sure do! We stock a range of both 100% merino balaclavas, and a range in Polartec® fleece. Both materials come in a variety of styles for cold or colder temperatures. And some features included are: adjustable face guards, a flip-down head section, and nose and mouth vents for high out-put breathing. Keep the wind chill out by closing the gap between a beanie and a neck warmer. We have options for you whether you're enjoying a leisurely dog-sled ride, skiing a double-black or trying your hand at ice climbing!
Is there men’s and women’s sizing for headwear?
Not specifically. All our styles come in either a unisex one size for all, a smaller and larger fit option or with adjustability. We stock an array of colour options in the sun protection hat and hiking hat range, and a vast range of styles in the beanie range as well. We’re confident you’ll easily find the right fit, and our friendly staff are happy to assist - making the choices down to practicality and personal taste.
Is a neck warmer necessary if I have a jacket?
A neck warmer or a neck buff will provide you next to skin warmth while keeping the wind chill from getting in between your layers. Think of it like a neck scarf without the extra length and thickness. It fits snugly between your base layer and your beanie. A jacket collar or hood only keeps out so much of the cold air around your neck in cold climates. We stock a range of merino neck chutes in various warmth ratings depending on your adventuring needs. Alternatively a fleece neck warmer is like a jumper for your neck! And our merino Icebreaker range is designed with the option of being worn over the mouth and nose as well for added face protection.
Is a mosquito head net really necessary?
Nothing can ruin an experience faster than constantly swatting away what feels like millions of mosquitos, bush flies or sand flies - that telltale whine of tiny wings, breathing with your mouth firmly closed or sand fly bites that itch for weeks! A mosquito head net can feel like a life saving piece of kit, particularly in the Australian and New Zealand wilderness. We stock a range of mosquito head nets, including: treated and non-treated. Our treated range is pre-soaked with permethrin, a popular and very safe insect repellent, to prevent bugs even landing on the mosquito head net mesh. This is the ideal option if not being used over a wide-brimmed bush hat. We also stock an ultralight weight option in the Sea To Summit Nano Mosquito Head Net, packing down to the size of a matchbox, yet still with a durable mesh, it does not compromise visibility. A regular mosquito head net only takes up as much space in your pack as a head torch, and is just as missed when you wish you had one.
Do I need a beanie for my adventure?
We lose up to 10 percent of our body heat from our head, which may not seem like much but if we’re already feeling the cold, it can make us miserably chilly. A beanie can be as compact or as lavish as you like. A fleece beanie is a warm hug for your head, coming in fisherman styles with a box cuff, and skull cap styles for fitting under helmets or an outdoor hat, and even options with ear-flaps. The fleece beanie choices range from stylish loose knits through to toasty double-layered fleece - there’s a beanie to suit your adventure and style. A merino beanie comes in luxury knits, reversible pocket-sized options for a slimline fit or an emergency kit, and the merino beanie has the best warm-when-wet heat retention for extreme weather adventurers.
Does Paddy Pallin stock neck protection for hot weather?
Absolutely! We stock lightweight merino and quick-dry chutes that can be worn like a neck scarf or under your sun protection hat like a bandana. We offer a wide range with a UPF sun protection rating. As well as models that utilise Cool-Lite™ fabric, comprising merino and natural TENCEL® that promotes a cooling effect in warm weather. For long hours out in the heat, Body Cooler makes a range of Body Cooling Neck Wraps designed to be submerged in water, then worn like a neck scarf, they stay cool for hours and hours! They can even be frozen for multi-day use.
Does Paddy Pallin stock sunglasses?
Yes! At Paddy Pallin we stock a wide range of Julbo sunglasses to protect your eyes on the trail when the sun is out. Whether you need hiking sunglasses for your local trail or mountaineering sunglasses for scaling mountains in the Himalayas we have the sunglasses for the activity.
What brands does Paddy Pallin stock in head and neckwear?
Our line-up of industry leading brands offer a range in sun protection hat, beanie, balaclava and bush hat options. Barmah is one of the Australian classic bush hat brands that exclusively create a wide brim outdoor hat range. Outdoors brands such as The North Face, Patagonia, Arc’teryx, ExOfficio, Mont and Kuhl all range a wide variety of beanie, hiking hat and sun protection hat options with fleeces, and bucket, trucker and baseball cap styles on offer. Icebreaker and RAB round out the winter options with an array of beanie, thermal headband and balaclava choices for any cold climate adventure. In hot weather neckwear and neck warmer options, we stock many of these brands, as well as ranges from Buff and MATT. Whether you’re after a minimalist look or a logo piece, all our headwear is high quality and focused on practicality, so you can worry about the path a-head - not your gear!
