What sort of water treatment options can I buy at Paddy Pallin?

Having access to clean, safe water whilst out hiking isn’t something best left to chance. There are different types of water filtration available, and knowing what is suitable for the area you’re planning to visit can be a bit tricky. At Paddy Pallin, we stock a variety of water treatment options including water purification tablets, portable water filters and UV lamp treatment. If you’re not sure what to choose, be sure to chat with one of our knowledgeable shop staff.  

Does Paddy Pallin sell hiking poles?

Hiking poles, or trekking poles, are a super helpful hiking accessory. They give you added grip, help with posture and assist with reducing strain to your muscles and joints. It’s been said that once you try poles, you’ll never go on a big hike without them again! At Paddy Pallin, we stock a range of Komperdell and Black Diamond hiking poles, with several models of each to select from. Hot tip: For transit be sure to add some hiking pole rubber tips, to avoid the pointed ends puncturing your luggage. 

How long should my hiking poles be?

When shopping for trekking poles, you’ll discover they either come in a fixed-length or are adjustable. To find out what length you’ll need, stand upright with your upper arms hanging straight down. Meanwhile, your forearms are to be at 90 degrees pointing forward, parallel to the ground. The handgrip on your pole should comfortably line up with your outstretched hand.  

Which GPS units does Paddy Pallin stock?

Navigating in the outdoors can be tricky, especially when hiking off-track. With a portable handheld GPS unit, you can remove the guesswork, stay safe and on track. Garmin GPS units are at the forefront of satellite navigation and tracking technology, and we stock a selection of quality Garmin GPS units. Another way to navigate via GPS is with a smartwatch that is GPS enabled, such as those made by Garmin. 

What types of personal safety beacons or PLBs are available? 

Often mobile phone coverage doesn’t extend into the wilderness areas we love to explore. When this is the case, carrying a safety beacon with GPS and satellite connectivity is always recommended. At Paddy Pallin, we stock several models, from the basic Ocean Signal PLB device to two-way communications units such as the Garmin In-Reach Mini.

Which knives and multi-tools does Paddy Pallin sell?

Carrying a small knife or multi-tool in the outdoors can help get you out of some sticky situations, be it on-the-fly repairs, opening that vital tin of beans or even just cutting up a block of cheese. At Paddy Pallin, we stock two main brands of multi-tools and knives. Leatherman, who are known for quality USA made multi-tools, knives and multi-purpose pliers; and Victorinox, who are best known for making the classic Swiss Army knife. We also keep some nifty Nite Ize EDC pocket and keyring sized tools.

Are topographic hiking maps available at Paddy Pallin?

Maps might have been a bit old-school to some, but they’re still the most reliable and simple solution for navigation in the outdoors. Printed hiking trail maps don’t run out of batteries either! We have a selection of maps for NSW and Victoria available on the web store here. Plus each of the Paddy Pallin stores will have maps specific to their local state and area. 

Can I buy a hiking compass at Paddy Pallin?

You can't beat a good old fashioned magnetic compass for simple, battery-free reliable navigation. They’re especially useful when used in conjunction with a topographic map. We sell quality compasses from Silva.

Does Paddy Pallin sell outdoor and GPS watches?

Today’s watches can do far more than just tell the time. Paddy Pallin stocks a range of Coros outdoor watches. These are jam-packed with features such as GPS tracking and navigation, fitness tracking, training guides, altimeters, compasses, messaging, and more - they do still tell the time too! 

What types of hydration products are available at Paddy Pallin? 

Staying hydrated while hiking is super important, and often you’ll need to drink more water during a hike than normal. It’s not unusual to require more than 3 litres of water throughout a day of hiking. But how should you transport all that water? There are two main methods, water bottles and water bladders. Bottles are a staple, and having a selection of good, reusable water bottles in different shapes and sizes is mega useful. But for carrying a bit more, especially on longer hikes, it’s hard to go past a hydration bladder. These come in capacities from 1.5 to 3 litres and provide handy on-the-go hydration on the hiking trail. Keeping track of all your hiking gear shouldn’t be a hassle. These will help keep your hiking gear protected and sorted at all times.

Good quality hiking gear can last for many years, but sometimes accidents happen and your gear needs a bit of TLC. We’re all about the ‘repair, don't replace’ ethos, and carry a range of products to help with some DIY gear repairs. Some of the range includes tenacious tape, patch kits, down jacket repair tape, sewing kits, tent repair kits, multi-tools, spare buckles, accessory cord, outdoor gear cleaners, waterproofing liquids and sprays, sealants and adhesives.
