What is a hydration pack?

A hydration pack is a hiking backpack or running backpack that comes complete with a hydration reservoir, or water bladder as it’s also known. These removable hydration bladders allow you to drink hands-free while running or hiking. Paddy’s stocks both small hydration packs and large hydration backpacks. Small hydration packs like the Osprey Katari have room for your water bladder, a snack, and a small extra like a wind shell. These are the best hydration packs for running or for short hikes. Should I use a water bladder or water bottles while hiking?

This is a personal choice. Many people prefer to use a water bladder while hiking as it’s easier to access. If you find yourself straining your shoulders or having to stop a friend anytime you want a sip of your water, you may well prefer a hydration bladder. Hydration reservoirs also leave your hands free for scrambling, photo-taking, or using hiking poles.

On the other hand, some people prefer bottles as they can more easily see how much they’ve drunk and how much water they have left. Bottles can also be easier to clean, though with a bit of care hydration bladders can keep in good nick for years.

How do I clean my water bladder?

Your hydration bladder should be rinsed and allowed to dry after each use. What size water bladder do I need?

At Paddy Pallin we stock a range of sizes of hydration reservoirs - from 1.5L water bladders through to 3L water bladders, with 2L water bladder and 2.5L water bladder options in between. Most hikers will opt for a 2L hydration reservoir or a 2.5L hydration reservoir as this is enough on most trips, especially if you’re pairing it with a bottle. If you’re doing half day trips, a 1.5L hydration reservoir may be ideal. If you’re putting in long days, hiking in the heat, or out somewhere with limited water sources, a 3L hydration bladder is likely your best bet. Whatever size hydration bladder you choose, you don’t have to fill it up the whole way on every trip. It can be useful to choose a bigger water reservoir than you think you’ll need as it gives you the option of bringing more water.

How do I treat my water when using a water bladder?

There are a number of ways to purify your water when using a hydration pack. One of the simplest ways is by using water tablets like the Katadyn Micropur Forte or the Coghlan’s Drinking Water Tablets. This will neutralise viral, bacterial, and other biological contamination. Tablets do however take time to work, and you won’t be able to drink your water for two hours after treatment if you’re treating for giardia. Because of this, it can be good to have a separate bottle to drink from while treating the water in your reservoir. Other options for treating your water while using a bladder include pump filters like the Katadyn Combi or the Katadyn Pocket Water Filter that can fill directly into your hydration reservoir. You can also treat your water in a bottle using a UV wand such as the Steripen Classic, Steripen Ultra or Steripen Ultralight.
