FAQs
What are the essentials for my camp kitchen?
Camp kitchens can be lightweight and compact for hiking, or expansive for long-term set-ups. A vital addition to any kitchen is a camping stove. It’s recommended to have at least one hot meal a day, to ensure stable body temperatures and to keep morale up. A stove and camping gas is important for any kitchen, coupled with lightweight pots and pans. Before departing on your adventure, make sure your pots and pans are sufficient for what you need. If you’re boiling water to place into dehydrated camping food, make sure your camping pot is large enough.
Next in your camping kitchenware arsenal is lightweight plates, pot and utensils. Some dehydrated and freeze-dried camping food packaging acts as a bowl, meaning all you need is a fork! If cooking for a few, foldable bowls and cups are great for saving on size, and use durable silicon that lasts years. Camp kitchen utensils including foldable spatulas, spoons, forks and sporks save space and are easy to clean. The final essential for any camp kitchen is cleaning products. Sea To Summit has biodegradable and environmentally friendly cleaning liquid, perfect for cleaning on the go. If you want all that and the kitchen sink, Sea To Summit has created a lightweight, collapsible kitchen sink for the road.
What are easy foods to cook while camping?
There are great lightweight options for freeze-dried and dehydrated foods on the market. Using the highest quality ingredients, gone are the days of mushy dehydrated meals. Radix, Outdoor Gourmet, Campers Pantry and Strive Food deliver some of the easiest one and two-person meals on the market, some even have packaging that can be used as a bowl. If you’re interested in cooking from scratch, lightweight pasta and rice, coupled with simple sauces and stock cubes is a great option. When cooking on an open flame and embers, packing foil and baking potatoes, vegetables and meat is an easy way to feed the family.
Are all camping gases the same?
Camping gasses are a mixture of propane and butane, and the difference in mixture changes the operating temperature. Higher propane mixtures work better in the cold and have higher temperatures which reduces burning time, though it will burn faster. In general, most campers don’t have to worry about their camping gas mixtures unless they reach extremely high altitudes or low temperatures. We stock a range of camping gas canister sizes and brands, including Optimus, MSR and Jetboil.
What is the difference between solid, liquid and gas stoves?
Solid fuel camping stoves use lightweight fuel tabs or wood in a simple and lightweight set-up. These stoves are much slower and have reduced controllability of the flame. Liquid gas stoves are great for sub-zero environments and work with a range of fuel sources including methylated spirits, kerosene and gasoline. Though heavier, liquid fuel often works out cheaper in the long run and is easy to find when on the road. The most common camping stove is a gas camping stove, which uses gas canisters to create a high-output flame, handling wind and rain more effectively than solid fuel stoves. Camping gas canisters are becoming easier to find, and are incredibly lightweight.
Can I use a camping stove in a national park?
Camping stoves can be used in national parks, including gas camping stoves and electric camping stoves. During a total fire ban, solid fuel stoves and liquid fuel stoves including wood, petrol and oil are not permitted, though always check the local information including National Parks websites.
