FAQs
What thermal underwear do I need?
Our alpine expedition clothing range includes thermal underwear from Arc’teryx, 360 Degrees, Rab, and Helly Hansen including merino wool thermals from Icebreaker. When choosing a thermal base layer, you should consider the material, either polyester or merino wool. Merino wool has a great warmth-to-weight ratio, stays warm when wet and wicks moisture away from your body while exploring. Polyester thermals are quick drying, durable and have a better price point, which are great mountain clothing additions.
I need warm expedition clothing. What’s the best insulated mountain clothing?
Insulated jackets and pants from brands including The North Face, Patagonia, Rab and Arc’teryx are lightweight and ideal insulation in low temperatures. Due to perspiration and the high chance of water exposure, most expedition adventure clothing is filled with water repellent treated down or synthetic insulation, or coated with a durable water repellent. Versatility in adventure clothing means these insulated garments can offer stretch panels for greater mobility. Warmth doesn’t just come from pants and jackets, but also from protecting your extremities. Wearing insulated gloves, a beanie and a neck warmer from Buff, Matt or The North Face is easy, with comfortable polar fleece additions keeping you toastie warm.
Does Paddy Pallin sell alpine ski jackets?
Paddy Pallin stocks a wide range of adventure clothing, and we are firm believers in layering offering versatility. In saying this, Paddy Pallin does not generally stock ski jackets, being waterproof outer jackets with internal insulation, but rather stock individual insulation jackets and individual waterproof jackets. This allows you to temperature regulate in alpine environments, keeping you comfortable on the slopes.
Do I really need a hiking belt?
Hiking belts aren’t just a fashion accessory, they keep your hiking pants up while climbing, hiking and riding. Brands including Arcade have developed comfortable hiking belts with stretch, giving you flexibility and ease of movement when sitting, standing, reaching and stretching. Quick-release hiking belts are also an asset on the trail, with many having ‘click-and-go’ clasps for fast unbuckling when nature calls. Some travel belts have no metal parts, meaning you can keep your belt on whilst travelling through the airport. When on alpine expeditions and backcountry touring, some people experience dramatic weight changes, so having your trusty belt on hand can save you from some pant slips!
When would I wear a Vest?
Vests are a great addition to alpine expedition gear, as they allow freedom of movement whilst keeping your vital organs warm. Many alpine activities require a wide range of movement, from alpine ski touring to mountaineering, and a lightweight puffer vest will let you reach your full potential. Puffer vests are also lightweight, and pack down extremely small, and offer great versatility for all outdoor expeditions.
What features should I look for in Alpine expedition gloves?
Depending on your activity, expedition gloves can be a great asset, protecting you from cold weather, rough surfaces and snow. Wearing a glover liner paired with an insulating glove offers versatility, with liners wicking moisture away from your skin. When encountering rough mountaineering terrain, reinforced mountaineering gloves with leather grip pads offer an elevated level of protection. Rip-resistant outer gloves offer greater durability when using hiking poles or ski poles. Wind and water-resistant outer fabrics using Gore-Tex or similar are recommended, with low temperatures and snow increasing the risk of frostbite. Some gloves come with packable pouches for a quick stow feature, whilst some come with clips meaning your glove pairs stay together at all times.
