Men's Pants
The men’s hiking pants in our range come in a wide variety of styles including next-to-skin base layer thermal underwear, zip-off pants that convert to shorts, waterproof hiking pants and durable trousers for trekking. Men’s pants for travelling and hiking are constructed with quick-dry materials, utility pockets, belt-loops and articulated knee seams to ensure your men’s pants move with you every step of the way. We stock a wide variety of men’s pants in different fabric weights, from lightweight for humid environments to heavy duty for rough wear and cold urban environments, and everything in-between! We also have leg lengths that range from long (34” inseam) to extra-short (28” inseam) in our Kuhl and Patagonia men’s pants range. We also have you covered with waterproof hiking pants, from packable over-pants through to 3-layer waterproof membranes and gore tex pants. Insulated, water-shedding pants such as Patagonia R1 Daily Bottoms are great for sub-zero hiking, and while also ultra-fast drying, they then become perfect camp-pants for the end of a long day. Our range of base-layers and underwear include low output thermal pants designed to keep you warm when you are not creating heat, through to performance thermal pants designed to heat-dump in all the right places, keeping you warm but not overheated for high output adventures.
FAQs
What are the benefits of merino thermal pants over synthetic thermal pants?
There are a few key differences between merino and synthetic thermal baselayers. Merino wool is a natural fibre that possesses antibacterial properties that are inherent to the fibre itself, while some synthetic materials have an antibacterial treatment applied which washes out eventually. Merino thermal pants will retain their antibacterial properties for the life of the product meaning that you will get multiple days of use from your thermal pants before they need a wash. While thermal men’s pants made from synthetic materials are the fastest drying, merino fibres are also quick-drying. And should you get wet through your layers, merino thermal pants work to trap warm air next to the skin so you will stay warm while wet. This is not the case with synthetic thermals, however synthetic thermal pants are faster drying. Merino fibres can absorb more moisture than synthetic fibres, so to combat this difference Icebreaker have developed their performance thermal baselayers to heat-dump from areas that get the warmest during exercise. This prevents the merino fibres in your thermal bottoms from becoming damp with perspiration in the first place. We stock a wide range of merino thermal pants and tops perfect for any outdoor pursuit.
What is the difference between types of waterproof hiking pants?
The biggest difference between waterproof hiking pants is not actually waterproofing. It’s breathability. Waterproof hiking pants no longer come with an overall waterproof rating as the standard is: you can wear any waterproof hiking pants or overtrousers in your shower and remain dry on the inside. The waterproof/breathable membrane that many waterproof hiking pants have, such as gore tex pants, does have a rating for both waterproofing under high pressure (think: water getting between your hardshell and the tight hip-belt of your full hiking pack) and the breathability of the membrane when you are working hard inside it. A membrane in waterproof hiking pants will work to vent built-up heat, preventing perspiration from making you damp on the inside of your rain pants. Many of the waterproof men’s pants we stock have a full length zip to allow your waterproof hiking pants to be easily pulled on over hiking boots. An invaluable feature when the heavens open! All of the waterproof hiking pants we stock with a membrane are also designed for tough wear, with 50 denier and 70 denier fabric construction options, meaning bush-bashing through the Australian scrub won’t add any unexpected ventilation in the form of rips and punctures. Pop into a store to discuss the features available in waterproof men’s pants that would best suit your style of outdoor adventure.
How are men’s hiking pants different from regular men’s pants?
Men’s hiking pants are specifically designed for all day activity in the outdoors. They include features such as articulated-knee seams to prevent friction at the knee when out hiking all day, many of the fabrics are constructed with a degree of stretch as well, making it easy to select men’s hiking pants to use under a variety of conditions. Brands such as Kuhl design their range to have an urban look, transitioning seamlessly from, say, hiking in the Dolomites, to enjoying a traditional five course dinner, without having to change in-between. The Kuhl range includes both summer and winter weight pants, covering you no matter where your next trip is. We also stock a range of performance softshell men’s pants, designed to be breathable, quick-dry and windproof in sub-zero conditions. They also include features such as reinforced instep to prevent boot wear and tear on the pants inner cuff, 4-way stretch fabrics and double matrix fabrics, and like many of the other men’s pants we stock: a gusseted crotch for less pull on longer strides, belt loops on all men’s hiking pants and many combinations of stuffable packable stow pockets and stealth pockets for personalised utility. For ultralight hikers and space-conscious travellers we also stock convertible men’s hiking pants, packed with all the features of a regular pair of hiking pants men can swap from pants to shorts with a simple zip. Our zip off pants include front and back pockets, a coin pocket, and a bonus secure side cargo pocket. Quick drying, loose leg fit, and the right amount of stretch making zip off pants a go-to for a one-pant fits all adventures.
Are there any men’s pants that are environmentally friendly?
Short answer, yes. At Paddy Pallin we love experiencing the outdoors, and we’re also passionate about protecting the environment we play in. We choose to stock industry leading brands that share our ethos for the natural world as we only have the one planet, and we understand fast fashion is a big issue for the environment at a global level - this is one of the reasons we endeavour to stock high quality outdoor gear that will last through the many adventures ahead of you. Many brands stocked at Paddy Pallin create ethical and sustainable men’s hiking trousers which use recycled and ethically sourced materials. Many of our brands such as Patagonia and Marmot produce hard-wearing men’s hiking pants that are now constructed with all recycled materials. While brands such as Royal Robbins and Patagonia, again, produce men’s hiking bottoms that are Blue Sign Approved, meaning they must meet strict criteria to only cause the lowest possible impact on people and the environment when manufactured. Ask our friendly staff to point out these options when next in-store. Additionally when it comes to cleaning your waterproof hiking pants we also stock carbon neutral options with Nikwax.
